Expert Discusses Benefits of IMRT and Proton Therapy in Esophageal Cancer

While 3-D conformal radiation therapy is the current standard of care for the delivery of radiation, it can potentially cause long-term morbidity or mortality to patients. Advanced technology, like Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), can offer a more concentrated way of delivering a dose of radiation, and can, in turn, spare patients from life-threatening toxicities. For these reasons, Steven H. Lin, MD, PhD, believes IMRT should be adopted as the new standard.
