Chicago—A study using a cell line developed from a human patient with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Barrett’s esophagus suggests that exposure to acid and bile may reprogram normal squamous cells to take on pathogenic features. The finding is likely to fuel a long-standing debate about the origins of metaplasia in the esophagus.
