Heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux comes about when the highly acidic content of the stomach backs up (refluxes) through the esophagus and irritates it. Normally, food and stomach juices are prevented from flowing back through the esophagus by the contraction of a muscle band—the lower esophageal sphincter—that guards the opening of the esophagus into the stomach. When this muscle fails to close tightly enough, heartburn, characterized by a burning sensation on the chest that sometimes radiates to the neck, throat, and face, occurs.
