Early detection saves lives—and Paul Rovinsky’s journey proves it.

Early Detection Saves Lives: Paul Rovinsky’s Story of Hope

In 1999, Paul began experiencing difficulty swallowing after a vacation. He paid attention to the symptoms and sought medical care quickly. That decision changed everything. Soon after his diagnosis with esophageal cancer, Paul began treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery over the course of nine months.

During that time, Paul met Bart, the founder of the Esophageal Cancer Education Foundation (ECEF). Bart was also navigating his own diagnosis, but Paul was slightly further along in his journey. That connection mattered. They shared information, perspective, and hope during one of the most uncertain times in their lives. More than 25 years later, both men remain in remission—living proof that survival is possible and that advances in treatment make a difference.

Paul didn’t just receive care—he helped shape it. He participated in a clinical trial testing new chemotherapy approaches at a time when options were limited. His willingness to step into the unknown contributed to research that continues to improve outcomes for patients today.

Like many survivors, Paul’s journey didn’t end with remission. He has faced long-term health challenges, including heart complications tied to treatment. Still, he continues to move forward with resilience, purpose, and gratitude.

He also chose to give back. Through ECEF, Paul has supported and mentored other patients, offering insight to those newly diagnosed and reassurance to caregivers navigating the unknown. He understands how overwhelming the early days can feel—and how important it is to have someone who has been there.

After the loss of his daughter in 2022, Paul found another way to channel his experience. He began writing poetry to express gratitude and reflect on the people and moments that shaped his journey. Through the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Visible Ink program, he discovered a meaningful way to say thank you.

Paul Rovinsky’s Story of Hope

One passage captures what that gift of time truly means:

Thanks to MSK care, twenty six years added to my life
Precious time with grandkids, golden years with my wife

DEEP INSIDE ME

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLAN

My mind, body and soul, stored darkest secrets to hide

MSK testing, found the esophageal cancer deep inside

Much time I’ve spent searching, for answers hard to find

But MSK doctors pinpointed, problems in body and mind

After an extensive review, my treatment plan was prepared

The MSK doctor and family, discussed the plan as shared

As doubts were divulged, my MSK doctor was humanistic

Instilling confidence and comfort, while also being realistic

CHEMO AND RADIATION

As the treatment begins, the chemo needle gets inserted

MSK nurses were by my side, so that I never felt deserted

As chemicals entered, my body and mind took a rough ride

But MSK nurses, gave me sedatives that made it subside

Applying tiny tattoo markers, helped radiation be minimized

It took MSK teamwork, for results to be ideally optimized

This twenty eight day routine, caused my cancer cells to die

When done with weekly chemo, under the MSK watchful eye

RECUPERATION AND SURGERY

My body mind and soul, were numb and without feeling

But MSK therapy, prepared me for next steps of healing

Taking a six week health break, was MSK music to my ears

I regained my strength, with family, friends and my peers

In the cold operating room, MSK nurses warmed my heart

As I drifted off, the life sustaining surgery began to start

Awake in the recovery room, I was just grateful to be alive

But in those critical hours, MSK nurses helped me survive

RECOVERY

Now in a hospital bed, tubes were in both front and back

As my MSK surgeon, gave the plan to keep me on track

Helped by MSK nurses, recovery steps got me on my feet

To beat discomfort and pain, I went forward without retreat

Comfort from family and visitors, raised my spirits up high

Caring MSK nurses, made eleven long days go swiftly by

The MSK discharge plan, meant me having a urinal near

Being home with family, diminished all my pent up fear

THE LONG ROAD BACK

My mind and body, began the steep climb to recovery

MSK post op support, was my most pleasant discovery

Pain management and chemo brain, were my new reality

Supporting ECEF research, helped me regain my vitality

Changes were made, to sleep, eating and when I drink

And I write poetry, as a part of MSK program Visible Ink

Thanks to MSK care, twenty six years added to my life

Precious time with grandkids, golden years with my wife
